Online courses offer students the opportunity to learn how to design their own websites.
But a growing number of designers have found that the online design community provides them with a deeper understanding of what it takes to make websites work, and the challenges they face designing a business.
While some students are finding that online courses are the only way to learn about their work, others have found ways to supplement their courses with online resources.
Some designers are turning to a new medium: the web.
While online courses offer a better foundation for designing a website, they do not offer the same level of accessibility and flexibility that they offer in print.
“It’s really a new platform that you can use, where you can learn more and have access to more content,” said Sarah Schulz, a graphic design student at the University of Pennsylvania.
“A lot of times, a print book or a digital book, you’re not going to be able to access all of that information because of how the technology is designed.”
For Schulz and other designers, finding the right online resources is critical for understanding the complexity of their work and getting the most out of their digital skills.
“The more time you spend studying online, the more you’re going to have to do in real time,” she said.
“If you want to get a job, you need to be in front of your computer all the time.”
But even with the tools available online, designers still have to navigate the design process.
Schulz said she often gets frustrated when she finds that designers have no idea how to create their websites.
“They have a lot of stuff they need to work out, but they don’t have any tools to help them,” she explained.
“You have to be the one to say, ‘Let’s do it this way.'”
To help students navigate the online environment, designers are starting to use tools that they can access in print: courseware.
The internet offers designers a much wider variety of design resources than print books and websites, but the lack of accessibility can make it difficult for students to find the right resources to work from.
While students can access print resources online, there are no print courses that offer design students the tools they need for online classes.
The National Association of College and University Libraries offers a number of print resources.
However, some designers find the digital version of those materials extremely intimidating.
For example, online courses usually only cover a small percentage of the materials they need, while print courses cover much of the material.
“I think there are some things that are a bit more difficult, in terms of making a print textbook, in the digital world,” said Lisa Hausmann, a digital design student and design instructor at the College of Charleston.
“There’s no way that you’re able to have that in print, so it’s definitely a challenge.”
Designers can’t just go to a textbook and go, “Hey, look, this is what you need.”
Instead, designers must make their own courseware using Adobe Illustrator and a variety of print materials.
Hausman, who teaches online courses at the Charleston College of Design, found that her courses are much easier to navigate because she uses a print version of the courseware instead of a digital version.
“Sometimes, students have a hard time figuring out how to get the materials into Illustrator, because there are certain design elements that are not in the print version,” she told Mashable.
“For example, it’s hard to figure out how the design on the cover of the book is going to look.”
Hausann, who also teaches online design classes at the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, said the same problems can occur in print classes.
“One of the most common problems I have with print design courses is that students don’t understand how to do it,” she admitted.
“When you’re learning to print, it can be a little daunting.”
To help designers navigate the digital environment, Hausnaman developed a print design curriculum.
Her coursework includes a design brief that explains how to print a design, a checklist that includes the right materials, and even a few tutorials that give designers a step-by-step guide to using a variety to create a digital project.
While Hausnais print courseware doesn’t offer a digital print option, it does include a print option for designers.
“My students love it,” Hausanne said.
But when it comes to learning to design, students are always looking for the best materials.
“We try to focus on a digital environment because it’s not a print environment,” Haisman said.
However she said, the digital tools available to designers are still limited.
“With the digital materials, there is more flexibility.
But it also means that you need a lot more time to get that digital environment working.
You need to do a lot,” she added.
